Andrew Pinard LIES! (Honestly...):
Live at The Barley House

Built around the premise that magic is perhaps the most honest of all professions—the magician tells you that he is going to lie to you and then does so—award-winning entertainer Andrew J. Pinard offers a whimsical mix of theatre, sleight-of-hand, comedy, and storytelling. Over the course of the performance, Pinard explores the role that lies play in our lives. From the lies we tell ourselves (often without knowing we're doing it) to the lies we tell each other and the lies we are told, Pinard playfully examines the world of deception and even encourages his audience at one point to lie to him.

A blend of magic and comedy with a little help from volunteer assistants, Pinard draws spectators into his zany world of wonder where they leave the mundane world behind and inhabit a magical realm of the impossible and absurd where nothing is what it seems. As Andrew says, "I only lie to benefit myself."

This dynamic one-man, stand-up magic show premiered in the summer of 2007 and ran for two months in Old Orchard Beach, ME.

A full-time performer since 1991, Pinard has performed his unique brand of magic and comedy for thousands of delighted audiences throughout the Northeast including performances at Wentworth by the Sea, the Mount Washington Hotel & Resort, The Balsams, Jay Peak Ski Resort, Caledonia County Fair, Sandwich Fair, First Night New Hampshire and for ten years twice weekly at Newick's Restaurant in Merrimack, NH. He performs strolling sleight-of-hand entertainment for the public each Thursday evening at The Barley House in Concord, NH.

Andrew J. Pinard Celebrates Seventh Anniversary of Performances
at Newick's Seafood Restaurant

Merrimack, NH—In the last six years, Andrew J. Pinard has performed for over 120,000 people. This may not appear to be much of an accomplishment, in an era when rock groups play stadiums that will seat up to 50,000 people at a time. It becomes impressive when you realize that he has done this by performing for groups of only 4 to 6 people at a time. Then you find out that this number only comprises two nights a week out of his busy performing schedule, you begin to understand how numbers play a strong role in his life.

Let’s look at some more numbers in his life: 1,047 hours of travel by car (each year), 1,820 hours of performing (at Newick’s alone), 67,392 playing cards (again, just at Newick’s), when you factor in Pinard’s other performances, it adds up to tens of thousands of smiles each year from one performer.

Featured in New Hampshire Magazine’s annual “The Very Best Of New Hampshire” issue in July 2002 for his sensational sleight-of-hand (“or is it?”). Pinard has joined a very small group of individuals and businesses honored by New Hampshire Magazine. Not once, but twice. He was also featured in their July 2000 issue as New Hampshire’s “Best Magical Entertainer.” Yet another number to add to the list.

August 1st marks the beginning of the seventh year that entertainer Pinard has performed his brand of close-up magic at Newick’s Seafood Restaurant in Merrimack, New Hampshire. His relaxed style belies what the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts has called his “. . . impressive ability with sleight-of-hand technique.”

An award-winning performer, Pinard delights and astounds restaurant guests with magical feats just inches away. Magic has gained in popularity recently appearing in the news, on TV, and in theatres and stadiums across the country. What makes Pinard’s performance unusual is the audience’s proximity to the performer. There’s no possibility for tricky camera angles and editing, nothing comes between you and the performer but a good time.

Often, Newick’s guests have experienced magic before they are even seated. There’s magic in the bar, in the waiting area, at the tables, and even on the ceiling, which is covered with hundreds of signed playing cards. Pinard strolls from table to table making each group feel welcome and comfortable. Armed with ordinary objects, he makes the ordinary extraordinary. When he visits a table he might restore a playing card that had been torn into pieces, make two rubber bands fuse into one, or cause nuts and bolts to trade places. Pinard explains, “I don’t control the magic. It is within each of our guests. I try to help people to see the magic that they carry within themselves.” The table-side entertainment is a lively and personalized garnish to a meal.

Pinard thinks of himself as Newick’s magical ambassador. “I try to make sure that our guests have a great experience by entertaining them in the wait area ensuring that their wait feels brief, helping them celebrate that special occasion at their table, amazing them in the bar, or just visiting with them. I like to get to know our guests personally so I can recognize them when I see them again.”

Each performance is unique. “I have made a definite choice as a performer to be completely interactive. It’s not about the tricks I perform, but rather the shared experience that happens between me and the audience.” He should know. For four years he has been writing about the “shared experience,” travelling and sharing with other magicians through his “Shared Experience” workshop the importance of creative interactive play and the impact it can have on audiences.

In addition to leaving his mark locally, Pinard has won awards and accolades from his peers for his performances throughout New England. He has written two booklets on magic. His ideas and creations have appeared in several magazines, and he has contributed to over a dozen books for the trade. He is Co-Publisher and Art Director for The Magic Menu—The Professional Journal for Working Close-up Magicians, a trade journal that is read in eleven countries. He lectures for magicians and also serves as a National Deputy of the Society of American Magicians.

The most important number in Pinard’s life? “Three.” Why three? “To quote Schoolhouse Rock, ‘Three . . . is a magic number.’ For any theatrical performance to take place, there must be an audience. You need the performer as catalyst. I like to think of myself as a tour guide to the impossible and absurd. Then, you need two people to take part.” Why two? “Because when someone experiences strong magic, they need someone to confirm what they thought they saw. Without an audience, there is no magic.”

Visit Newick’s Seafood Restaurant for yourself and see why, for the past six years, Pinard’s magic has been one of the most popular specials on their menu.
